Most of the wildflower photographs on these pages were shot within 50 miles of Lynchburg, Virginia. Many of them were taken along the Blue Ridge Parkway, which passes about 12 miles to the west of Lynchburg. The Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 miles along the crests of the Southern Appalachians from the southern end of Shenandoah National Park near Waynesboro, Virginia, to the Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North Carolina. Within a 15-mile stretch from the nearest entrance to Lynchburg, the Parkway goes from its lowest elevation, 649 feet, to its highest elevation in Virginia, 3960 feet.
